"We Carried Our Kids to Works"

The couple are proud that despite his disability, Sukur is successfully running his own business in Kuala Lumpur.

This was a far cry from the day he was born with stunted limbs.

"He was the talk of the town in my hometown in Muar. People came from all over to see him and until he was 3 years old, he would shy away from people and would even hide under his bed whenever we had visitors at home," remembered Aishah.

"But things changed when my husband managed to coax him into participating in colouring contests and singing competitions when he was 5 years old.

"From then on, he was not afraid to go out in public. He was extremely good in colouring and singing, and won many prizes in competitions," she proudly added.

With the confidence nurtured in him by his parents, Sukur became more independent and managed to complete his studies and obtained a degree in computer studies from a local university.

"He now runs a laundromat and a few other businesses with his friends in Kuala Lumpur and he even gives motivational talks all over the country," said a beaming Aishah.

In 2003, Sukur, was honoured with the Reader's Digest Inspiring Asians award in recognition of his outstanding achievements, and for bringing hope to Malaysians.
